The end of Small Business Server
Microsoft officially announced the end of the Small Business Server product range in July 2012, but the impact of this is yet to be felt by new and established small businesses.
Small Business Server was a cheap and reliable means of getting core software for your business such as a Server, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, remote email access, file and print services and centralised windows updates for a reasonable price. The product with 5 Client Access Licenses (CALs) was about a £600 add on to a new server with additional 5 packs of CALs costing about £300. You could have up to 75 users accessing the server with the cost being just £300 for every 5 additional users. These were one-time costs, so you could quite easily budget for future growth.
To show the costs of this, a business with 40 staff would pay £600 for SBS 2011 and £2100 for the CALs, making a total of £2700.00 to have 40 people use the network.
The replacement server is Microsoft Server 2012 Essentials which can have a maximum of 25 users, so no good for growing businesses which is about £275, but it comes as a hybrid server / cloud based services machine so you need to be looking at using Office 365 for email and SharePoint (at approx £4.60 per user per month) which soon adds up with 25 users.
For businesses larger that 25, or those that are planning to have more than 25 staff, the next level is Windows Server 2012 Standard which comes in at a whopping £550 for the operating system alone. You will also need CAL's, plus Exchange and CAL's (£1200 for the server and 5 CALs and £380 per 5 CALs after that)
For 40 users the cost to a business for Windows Server, and Exchange 2010 would be £1750 for the server and CALs plus £3500 for Exchange making a total of £5250, that's without the rest of the applications included in Small Business Server 2011.
If your planning to grow your business, or are looking to invest in a Server then I would recommend doing it within the next couple of months, as the cost might just double if you wait any longer.
