Windows XP end of life
For those businesses and individuals who are still using Windows XP which has been a really good reliable operating system, then you now need to start planning for the future.
Microsoft have announced that support for Windows XP will end on 8th April 2014. That means they will no longer produce security updates for the operating system, even if some big and nasty virus comes out.
There are 2 options for XP users. The first is to stick with the operating system but invest in a really good anti-virus program. ESET and Kaspersky provide good, non-intrusive anti-virus programs which update every couple of hours or so.
The second option is to upgrade. If you purchased a machine before 2006, then your options will be pretty limited. Windows 7 may run on the machine, but you may find that the hardware is slow to respond due to underpowered processors and not enough RAM. If your machine is 2007 onwards, you should be fine with a Windows 7 upgrade.
Windows 8 is.....not nice. If you're a business, it just doesn't work I'm afraid as the tiles are cumbersome and need rearranging in order to find some sort of normality. The start button which appears in Windows 8.1 is daft and not very helpful, and the use of the corners to be able to find anything is just plain silly.
Having worked with Microsoft Windows since Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and every version in between, I'm astonished by how far they've taken the technology in the race with Apple, rather than sticking to a winning formula. The tablet market may be growing, but customers aren't prepared to replace a PC or laptop with a tablet because they don't have the same functionality.
If you go for a new PC or laptop, most manufacturers are supplying Windows 8 machines which have been downgraded to Windows 7. If you don't want to take a course on "where did everything on my PC go", then stick to Windows 7 or a downgraded Windows 8 machine.
