GoZeus and CryptoLocker back with a vengence
At the moment there is a massive increase in the number of fake invoice emails sent around the internet.
The majority of these contain viruses such as GoZeus which attempts to hijack and steal banking details, and CryptoLocker which encrypts file systems and demands payment to unencrypt the files.
There was a major crackdown by combined police forces to take the servers offline, but they now appear to be back with a vengeance (we are receiving approx. 50 emails per day with the virus)
If in doubt about the validity of an email, check the sender ID. The vast majority of these emails come from spoof email addresses, so if you receive an invoice from Vodafone and the sender is email@example.com there is every chance it’s a fake email.
If the emails contain links to website to view the invoice, check that the link actually goes to the website by hovering over it (don’t click) it should show the location above it
For example Barclays Website actually goes to my website.
Given the sums of money that can be lost, it is better to be safe than sorry.
